Learn the Language, Open the Door: How Migrant Women Can Access Affordable Language Courses in Belgium

Moving to a new country is already a big step. Learning the local language can be the next smart move — not just for work, but for everyday life, independence, and connection.

In Belgium, speaking Dutch, French, or even German (the country’s three official languages) can open many doors:

  • Finding a job

  • Helping your children with school

  • Understanding official documents

  • Feeling confident in daily life

And the best part? You don’t need a big budget. There are reliable, low-cost (and sometimes free) options available for women who want to learn.

1. House of Dutch (Huis van het Nederlands) – for Dutch learners in Brussels & Flanders

House of Dutch helps you find the best Dutch course for your level, location, and schedule. They don’t offer classes directly, but connect you to trusted schools and provide personal guidance.

Courses can cost as little as €50–100 per year.
If you are looking for a job or receiving social assistance, you may be eligible to study for free.

2. Municipal and Adult Education Schools – Dutch, French, and German

Across Belgium, public adult education centers (CVOs, CEFA, IFAPME, etc.) offer affordable language classes in Dutch, French, and German.

In Brussels, Cours Communaux de Langues Modernes (CCLM) also provides language courses, including French and Dutch, at reasonable prices.

These courses are generally:

  • Affordable (€40–100 per semester, depending on the provider)

  • Available during the day, in the evening, or online

  • Open to all levels, from beginner to advanced

  • Taught by certified and experienced teachers

If you are unemployed, looking for work, or a single parent, ask about discounts or free access.

A Skill That Will Always Help You — Wherever Life Takes You

Whether you plan to stay in Belgium for a few years or for life, learning one of the national languages will never be wasted. Even if you move to another country later, your ability to speak Dutch, French, or German is an advantage — in work, education, and personal growth.

Learning a language shows strength, flexibility, and willingness to grow — qualities valued everywhere.

Why Learn?

  • To understand your rights and speak for yourself

  • To connect with neighbors, teachers, or employers

  • To support your children in school

  • To build independence and confidence

You don’t have to be fluent. You just have to start.
